A leach field (drain field or soil absorption system) is the final treatment stage of a conventional septic system. Effluent from the tank is spread through trenches or beds, where the soil filters and treats it. Chamber systems replace the traditional pipe-and-gravel trench with open-bottom plastic chambers. The chambers create a void over the soil and are lighter and quicker to install.

- Site and soil evaluation: soil type, percolation or loading rate, depth to groundwater and restrictive layers.
- Design flow: usually based on bedrooms or building use under state rules.
